The August average price of EU lamb rose by 2% m-o-m and 9.4% y-o-y, to EUR 6,882/MT, supported by lower
production since the beginning of 2022, compared to the same period in 2021. EU lamb production in 2022 is
estimated to fall by 2% y-o-y. According to market participants, sheep and goat meat production relying on
purchased feed is likely to be affected by high feed prices, which may lead to additional slaughtering and lighter
slaughter weights.
The August average price of New Zealand lamb reached NZD 9,511/MT, down 1% m-o-m, due to a decline in global
imports, particularly from China in the last few months. However, the price rose 4.8% y-o-y, with seasonally low
supply on the market. New Zealand lamb prices are expected to fall from September, with the seasonal rise in
domestic lamb supplies.
In August, the average price of UK lamb fell by 12% m-o-m, to GBP 4,671/MT, following the seasonal trend. Lamb
prices are generally under pressure at this time of year as more animals come to market. The price decrease was
also driven by rising imports and reduced export demand. Nevertheless, prices were up 2.1% y-o-y.
