The average price of EU apples rose by 16.5% m-o-m to EUR 128/MT in December 2021, in line with
rising input costs, and growing export demand in Poland, the top EU apple producer. High costs of
packaging, energy and labour are currently contributing to increasing production costs. However, the
price of EU apples declined by 43.9% y-o-y in December 2021. The decline is attributable to the
large volume of apples available on the EU market, and reported rise in EU apple stocks in December
The Mintec price of US apples increased by 2.4% m-o-m and 14.2% y-o-y to USD 1,867/MT in
December 2021. Prices continue to rise due to stronger domestic consumption and soaring
production costs. Labour shortages, following high domestic unemployment during the pandemic,
are driving production costs higher, exerting further upward pressure on prices. According to the
USDA, US apple production is estimated to rise, up 2.6% y-o-y to 4.61 million tonnes for the 2021/22
MY, which could potentially ease the pressure on prices.

The Mintec price of Chinese apples increased by 0.9% m-o-m to USD 1,162/MT in December 2021.
Since September 2021, Chinese apple prices have risen gradually, in line with rising input costs and
logistical disruptions. As lockdown restrictions eased, retail demand surged, which led to a shortage
of containers, delays at ports and thus higher shipping costs. A combination of elevated shipping
rates and rising energy costs, following high raw material prices, contributed to the upward
momentum. In addition, the quality of high-grade apples is expected to be much lower following
adverse weather during H1 2021, likely supporting the price further.
2021, up 6.9% y-o-y. A plentiful supply is expected to ease the upward pressure on EU apple prices.
