Brazil nuts, dried apricot & sultanas
The fall in Brazil nut prices continued in December, with the average monthly price plummeting by
10% m-o-m, after previously declining by 2% in November. However, at USD 5.76/lb, the MBP is up
by 130% y-o-y, driven by supply tightness in Bolivia in the previous season. The current harvest in
South America is expected to have an easing effect on prices.
The Turkish dried apricot MBP (FOB TR) fell by 9% m-o-m to USD 5,780/MT, with the market
stabilising after prices previously peaked at USD 6,575/MT in October, on the back of supply tightness
in Turkey, especially for smaller sizes. Slower trading ahead of Christmas also contributed to the price
slump. On an annual basis, the benchmark rose by 67%.
The Turkish sultana MBP (CIF Northwest Europe) fell by 4% m-o-m in December, to USD 1,528/MT,
and was down 16% y-o-y. The fall is primarily attributed to the plummeting Turkish lira, which fell to
an all-time low of 18.18 against the dollar on 20th December, after the Turkish Central Bank slashed
its key interest rate by another 100 basis points to 14%.
