6P52 - Onion whs IN
The Mintec price of Indian onions rose by 1.85% m-o-m, to INR 18,333/MT, in August 2022. The Department of
Consumer Affairs continues to release buffer stocks through targeted open market sales to prevent price spikes
and scarcity. Prices have remained relatively stable in many parts of the country. However, in Guwahati onion
prices spiked, leading the government to divert 50,000 tonnes to ease any further upward price movement. Prices
are expected to remain relatively stable as the government continues to regulate onion supplies on the market,
aiming to reach market equilibrium, and prevent any price spikes.
The Mintec price of EU onions declined by 8.7% m-o-m to EUR 144/MT in June 2022, in line with steady demand
and an abundant market supply. According to market sources, many growers expect to have left-over supply at the
end of the season. Consequently, growers have lowered prices to increase competitiveness and boost sales.
Despite this, growers are still faced with high input costs, including energy, transportation and labour, which are
limiting the price decline.

EU processing potato (PO29 MBP) EU fresh potato (6Z19)
The average price of processing potatoes in the Netherlands (Mintec Benchmark Prices for EU countries) rose by
44.7% m-o-m, to EUR 227.9/MT in August 2022, as the new crop entered the market. This crop is priced at a
premium to encourage growers to harvest early and offset lower returns for reduced yields. The average price of fresh
potatoes in Germany declined 19.9% m-o-m, to EUR 419/MT, in August 2022. The recent decline reflects
seasonality, as prices fell after peaking in July in line with the early crop's arrival. However, the price of both fresh and
processing potatoes is up y-o-y, by 4.4% and 32.7% respectively. Prices have been supported by drought concerns.
with warmer than average temperatures and a lack of rainfall across Europe leading to a downward revision in yields,
combined with higher production costs.
The Mintec price of EU tomatoes from Spain rose by 21.2% m-o-m, to EUR 2,470/MT in August 2022,
attributable to a seasonal rise in demand. Additionally, prices were up by 32.3% y-o-y. Prices have risen on the
back of higher y-o-y input costs, largely energy, transportation and labour. According to market participants, the
cost of tomato production across Northern Europe has risen 40% year-on-year (y-o-y).
