The average price of EU pork reached EUR 1,658/MT, down 0.1% m-o-m in May due to increased supplies from
Denmark, Poland and Belgium in Q1-2021. However, the price remained 1.2% above the previous year's average
price (during the same period), with a recovery in demand both at the domestic and international levels. The partial
reopening of the catering industry in some areas across the EU led to increased consumer activity, which
supported a demand recovery.
The monthly average (CME) price of US pork rose by 4.2% m-o-m and 86.2% y-o-y in May to USD 2,409/MT,
driven by low pork stocks in the country. In addition, record-high exports to China and continued reopening of the
US economy, with accompanying employment growth, supported pork demand.
The average price of UK pork rose by 4.4% m-o-m to GBP 1,470/MT as UK pork production declined by 5% m-o-m
to reach 82,800 tonnes in May 2021. The lack of profitability and reducing margins, amid COVID-19 driven weak
demand, have led to the exit of several pig producers from the market. However, prices remained low y-o-y (-9%)
underpinned by weak foodservice demand.
