6P52 - Onion whs IN
The Mintec price of Indian onions increased by 12.9% m-o-m and 29.6% y-o-y to INR 17,500/MT in May 2021.
This can be attributed to a y-o-y increase in export demand. Furthermore, unseasonal rains during January in key
onion-producing states, and a shortage in seed availability during the December sowing period could impact
production volumes for the upcoming crop year.
The Mintec price of EU onions declined by 21.9 % y-o-y to EUR 180/MT in May 2021, in line with weaker
domestic and export demand. Removal of the Indian export ban on 1st January 2021 has led to weaker demand for
Dutch onions. Furthermore, demand is weaker from West Africa, with Senegal closing its border on imported
onions to protect its own domestic market.
