In June, the average price of EU eggs increased slightly by 0.4% m-o-m to EUR 1,258/MT. However,
the price fell by 2.8% y-o-y, mainly driven by high market supplies. The EU 2021 egg production is
forecast to increase by 2.5% y-o-y due to biosecurity measures implemented at poultry farms in
countries including Spain, Germany, and France to control the outbreak of AI in egg-laying hens.
These biosecurity measures have increased the egg-laying population in the EU, thus weighing on
prices.
The average price of US eggs fell by 5.2% m-o-m to USD 989/MT in June on the back of high
inventories. Since the beginning of 2021, the lay rate per 100 layers per day has been on an upward
trajectory and above the 5-year average. This suggests a younger, more productive layer flock,
increasing market supplies. However, the average price increased by 26.3% y-o-y due to high feed
costs.
