The Mintec price of Indian onions increased by 12.6% m-o-m and 50.1% y-o-y to INR 19,700/MT in
June 2021. This can be attributed to a y-o-y increase in export demand. Buffer onion stocks held by
the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) have limited the impact
of this bullish factor, following unseasonal rains during January in key onion producing states.
The Mintec price of EU onions declined by 29.4 % y-o-y to EUR 190/MT in June 2021, in line with
weaker domestic and export demand. Demand has been weaker from West Africa, with Senegal
closing its border to imported onions to protect its domestic market. Furthermore, export markets to
which the EU supplied onions during the Indian export ban have reduced their EU onion import
requirements, favouring the more price-competitive Indian onion.
The Mintec price of EU potatoes increased by 5.2% m-o-m to EUR 191.23/MT in June 2021, due to
higher demand, with the reopening of the foodservice sector. Ample potato supplies in the European
market were evident last year, leading prices to decline by 19.5% y-o-y for the reported period.
Stocks have since diminished, however, European potato markets continue to be well supplied.
The Mintec price of EU tomatoes increased by 18% y-o-y to EUR 2,151/MT in June 2021, following
higher retail demand. Furthermore, the price of tomatoes remains firm with the constant risk of
disease at home and abroad, impacting production. According to reports, the Netherlands currently
has 26 cases of contaminations and has reported losses of 5-30% of the crop, which is expected to
tighten the European tomato market.
