The average price of EU apples declined by 74.8% y-o-y and 23% m-o-m to EUR 170/MT in June
2021. This price decline is attributable to lower retail demand compared to the peak of coronavirusrelated
lockdown restrictions (Q2 2020). Furthermore, EU production is projected to increase by over
500,000 tonnes to 12.2 million tonnes due to higher supplies from non-commercial orchards.
European exports of apples are expected to be lower, with fewer commercial shipments, ensuring a
well-supplied European apple market.
The Mintec price of US apples increased by 7.8% m-o-m and 54% y-o-y to USD 1,745.50/MT in June
2021. The price increase can be attributed to lower US production for the 2020/21 MY. Production is
estimated at 4.5 million tonnes and is 0.36 million tonnes lower than initially projected due to lower
yields, wildfires and a windstorm reducing output in Washington.
The Mintec price of Chinese apples remained flat at USD 1,100/MT in June 2021. The Chinese apple
price has been stable over the last year, despite high transportation costs. Chinese producers in
recent years have struggled with profitability in both the domestic and international markets, in line
with the area devoted to apple production rapidly increasing. The lack of apple variety has hindered
apple exports to international markets and led to a bearish sentiment in the domestic market.
